Our Mission
Our work begins with the investigation of the kykeon of the Eleusinian Mysteries—one of the most enduring and influential ritual traditions of the ancient world. We are dedicated to the scientific investigation of the pharmacological knowledge embedded in the ritual, medicinal, and cultural traditions of the ancient Greek world. Greek texts, archaeology, and ritual practices preserve numerous references to pharmaka—natural substances capable of altering perception, relieving suffering, and shaping profound psychological experiences.
Advances in chemistry, pharmacology, and neuroscience now make it possible to investigate these ancient substances with modern scientific tools. EPOPTEIA brings together researchers across disciplines—including classical studies, archaeology, chemistry, pharmacology, and neuroscience—to study their chemical properties, biological effects, and cultural context.
By integrating ancient sources with contemporary laboratory research, the Center seeks to illuminate the pharmacological heritage of Greek civilization and explore its relevance for modern medicine and the scientific study of consciousness.
Our goals
01
Advance the Scientific Study of Ancient Pharmaka
EPOPTEIA investigates the pharmacological knowledge embedded in the ritual and medicinal traditions of the ancient Greek world. Through archaeopharmacology, natural product chemistry, and pharmacological research, we study substances referenced in classical sources in order to understand their chemical composition, biological activity, and historical context.
02
Build Research Infrastructure for Psychedelic Science in Greece
We work to establish the scientific and institutional foundations necessary for psychedelic research in Greece. This includes supporting laboratory studies, developing academic partnerships, preparing the regulatory landscape for clinical research, and connecting Greek scientists with international research networks.
Our goal is to position Greece as a serious contributor to global research on psychedelic compounds and consciousness science.
Safeguard the Intellectual Legacy of Ancient Pharmaka
Ancient Greek pharmaka emerged within complex cultural, ritual, and philosophical traditions. EPOPTEIA works to document, study, and protect this knowledge as part of Greece’s intellectual and scientific heritage. Through scholarship, research collaborations, and responsible stewardship, we aim to ensure that ancient formulations—such as kykeon and other historically attested pharmaka—are studied with rigor and respect, and that their legacy remains anchored within the cultural context from which they emerged.
